Dropbox → Nextcloud
What it saves, what actually moves, what you rebuild — and the thing that catches people.
What it costs, and what it saves
Dropbox Plus is about $12/month for 2TB. Nextcloud on a VPS with 2TB storage runs $10–20/month and serves a whole family or team rather than one person.
Moves cleanly
Files, via the desktop client or rclone. Version history does not transfer.
You rebuild
Sharing links — every shared Dropbox link breaks and needs reissuing.
What Dropbox costs you today
Free tier limited to 2 GB; paid plans per user per month for more storage
What actually holds you in
Cloud-only storage and per-user pricing; your files and sharing depend on Dropbox's service.
What you are moving to
Nextcloud is the most complete open-source Dropbox replacement — file sync and sharing plus calendars, contacts, and an app ecosystem — all on a server you control. It is the best all-round fit when you want Dropbox-style features without the cloud.
Free / open-source (self-host); paid support/hosting optional
Nextcloud strengths
- Closest all-round Dropbox replacement
- Sync, sharing, and an app ecosystem
- You own 100% of the data
What you give up
- You run and back up the server
- Fuller stack than a pure sync tool
The migration, step by step
- 1Provision storage first and confirm you have genuine capacity plus room for versions
- 2Install Nextcloud, ideally via the AIO Docker image which handles the fiddly parts
- 3Sync files up with rclone rather than the web interface for anything substantial
- 4Install desktop and mobile clients and verify sync both ways before deleting anything
- 5Reissue shared links and tell the people using them
The gotcha
Nextcloud's database is where performance lives or dies. The default SQLite install works for one user and collapses for a family — use PostgreSQL from the start rather than migrating later.
When to stay on Dropbox
You need Dropbox's sync reliability for large files across poor connections, which is genuinely best in class.
