Is 1Password free? What it actually costs in 2026

The short answer

1Password has no free tier. You get 14 days, then it is $2.99 a month — and that price is a first-year promotion.

There is no free plan for individuals, families or business. Every plan starts with a 14-day free trial and then bills; the password manager stops being usable for saving new items when the trial ends.

What the free tier actually includes

  • 14-day free trial, then payment is required
  • Individual: 1 seat, 1 GB of storage
  • Families: up to 5 members, 1 GB of storage each

Where the wall is

Day 15. But read the asterisk on the price: $2.99 for Individual and $4.49 for Families are promotional rates for new customers, for the first year, with annual billing, and only when you subscribe directly at 1password.com. The standard rates are $3.99 and $5.99, and buying through the Apple App Store or Google Play does not get the promotion at all.

After that: Individual at $2.99 a month paid annually ($3.99 standard); Families at $4.49 a month paid annually ($5.99 standard) for up to 5 people. Business and Enterprise are quote-only.

Can you self-host 1Password? No — cloud only

No. 1Password's apps are closed source and vaults sync through 1Password's own servers; there is no self-hosted edition at any price. Teams that need to hold their own vault data use Bitwarden or Vaultwarden instead.

What it actually takes to run one yourself

Real RAM against the documented minimum, monthly cost, setup time, and the one thing that catches people out.

Self-hosting Vaultwarden

needs 512 MB (docs say 128 MB)$6/mo, and it will happily share a box with other small services

Self-hosting Bitwarden

needs 4 GB for the official self-hosted stack (docs say 2 GB)$20–35/mo — which is more than the hosted plan costs
