Is Adobe Acrobat Pro free? What it actually costs in 2026

The short answer

Acrobat Reader is free to view, print and sign; everything else costs: Acrobat Express $9.99, Standard $14.99, Pro $19.99 and Studio $24.99 a month on an annual plan billed monthly. Free trials on Express, Pro and Studio.

Reader is 'Free. Always.' — viewing and basic markup. Editing text, organising pages, converting, combining and e-signature workflows are Standard and up. Cancelling an annual-billed-monthly plan after 14 days costs up to half the remaining commitment.

What the free tier actually includes

Where the wall is

Editing a single word. The moment a PDF needs its text changed, pages reordered or a form built, Reader stops and the meter is $14.99 a month for a year — the price of one desktop tool that does the same job once.

After that: Acrobat Express US$9.99 a month; Standard US$14.99; Pro US$19.99; Studio US$24.99 — all annual, billed monthly; a perpetual Acrobat Pro 2024 desktop licence exists as a one-time purchase, sold separately.

Can you self-host Adobe Acrobat Pro? No — cloud only

What it actually takes to run one yourself

Real RAM against the documented minimum, monthly cost, setup time, and the one thing that catches people out.

Self-hosting Stirling PDF

needs 4 GB for light use, 8 GB if people OCR scans or convert Office files. The docs say a 50 MB PDF can grow to 200–500 MB in memory, and LibreOffice and Tesseract run outside the Java heap, so set the container limit to at least 1.5× -Xmx. (docs say 4 GB, the vendor's smallest sizing tier (1–10 users: 2 cores, 4 GB, 10 GB disk, 4G container limit). There is an ultra-lite image for smaller machines, with core features only.)$7–24/mo on a 4 GB VPS. Since v3, API and automation use above 1,000 PDFs a month is metered unless you buy a licence or credits.

When paying is still the right call

Print-production preflight, heavy JavaScript-driven forms, enterprise e-sign workflows woven into Adobe's cloud, or an org-wide Adobe license you already pay for — in those cases Acrobat genuinely is the tool, and this page will save you nothing.

What you are locked into

Refreshingly little: PDF is an open ISO standard, so your files work everywhere. The residual lock-in is workflow habits and a few Adobe-specific behaviors (complex JavaScript forms, Liquid Mode) that don't travel.
