Is Algolia free? What it actually costs in 2026

The short answer

Algolia's Grow plan starts free with 10,000 search requests and 100,000 records a month, then bills per thousand from the first one over.

Grow is free to start: 10,000 search requests and 100,000 records included each month, with keyword search, browse, query suggestions, manual synonyms and 30 days of analytics retention. There is no free plan as such — there is a free allowance on a pay-as-you-go plan.

What the free tier actually includes

  • 10,000 search requests a month included
  • 100,000 records included
  • 10 rules per index
  • Manual synonyms only
  • 30 days of analytics retention

Where the wall is

What counts as a search request. Algolia meters requests, not users or searches-as-a-human-would-count-them, so an as-you-type experience sends one request per keystroke that fires a query — the pattern Algolia is famous for is also the pattern that spends the allowance fastest. 10,000 requests can be a few hundred real searches.

After that: Grow bills $0.50 per additional 1,000 search requests and $0.40 per additional 1,000 records. Grow Plus adds AI ranking, advanced personalization and 90 days of analytics retention, and bills $1.75 per additional 1,000 requests. Elevate, with NeuralSearch and a 99.99% availability commitment, is quoted.

Can you self-host Algolia? No — cloud only

No. Algolia is a hosted API only. Typesense, Meilisearch and OpenSearch are the self-hosted routes; the work in moving is rarely the data, which re-indexes mechanically, but the front-end InstantSearch components built around Algolia's response format.

What it actually takes to run one yourself

Real RAM against the documented minimum, monthly cost, setup time, and the one thing that catches people out.

When paying is still the right call

Stay if search is a core revenue surface and relevance tuning is worth real money — Algolia's ranking engine, merchandising rules and A/B testing on search results are ahead of the open options, and for e-commerce that gap converts. Stay if you need global edge distribution without operating it, which is genuinely hard to replicate. Stay if you are inside the free tier. And stay if nobody wants to own a search server: an unmonitored self-hosted index that silently stops updating is worse than an invoice.

What you are locked into

Moderate, and concentrated in the front end rather than the data. Records are yours and re-indexing elsewhere is mechanical. What costs time is that Algolia's InstantSearch libraries and its ranking configuration — custom ranking attributes, tie-breaking, synonyms, rules — are specific to their engine, so a migration is re-tuning relevance rather than copying settings. Meilisearch and Typesense both ship Algolia-compatible adapters for InstantSearch, which removes most of the front-end work and is the single biggest reason migrations here are cheaper than they look.

If you would rather not pay: Meilisearch
