Is Datadog free? What it actually costs in 2026

The short answer

Datadog's free tier covers 5 hosts with 1-day retention — enough to evaluate it, not enough to run on it.

Free covers up to 5 hosts. A host is any physical or virtual OS instance, which means every VM and every Kubernetes node counts.

What the free tier actually includes

  • 5 hosts maximum
  • 1-day metric retention
  • Core collection and visualisation only
  • No meaningful alerting history at one day of retention

Where the wall is

Retention, before host count. One day of metrics means you cannot investigate anything that happened yesterday, which is when most incidents actually get investigated. The five-host cap then bites the moment a Kubernetes cluster scales, because every node counts as a host.

After that: Paid plans start around $18 a month, with infrastructure monitoring commonly landing near $27 per host per month once the features teams actually enable are included. Datadog bills across many separate products, so a host price is a floor rather than a total.

Can you self-host Datadog? No — cloud only

Datadog is SaaS-only by design. This is the most cited reason teams move to Grafana with Prometheus, or to SigNoz — not price on its own, but that the telemetry leaves their infrastructure and the bill scales with how much of it they send.

What it actually takes to run one yourself

Real RAM against the documented minimum, monthly cost, setup time, and the one thing that catches people out.

When paying is still the right call

One integrated pane for metrics, logs, traces, APM, and security — with turnkey setup, managed scaling, and vendor support — is genuinely unmatched. If you would rather pay than run and maintain your own observability stack, or you lack the platform team to operate one, Datadog earns its price for many organizations.

What you are locked into

Proprietary agents, proprietary query languages, and per-host/per-feature pricing mean both your cost and your data gravity grow with your fleet — the more you instrument, the harder and more expensive it is to leave.

If you would rather not pay: Grafana + Prometheus
