Is Red Hat OpenShift free? What it actually costs in 2026

The short answer

No. Red Hat's free option is a 30-day Developer Sandbox trial; running OpenShift for real is a paid subscription or managed service.

There is no permanent free tier. Red Hat offers a free 30-day Developer Sandbox, plus trials of OpenShift Dedicated and self-managed OpenShift Container Platform.

What the free tier actually includes

  • Developer Sandbox: a free 30-day trial environment
  • Trial clusters of OpenShift Dedicated and self-managed OpenShift Container Platform
  • No permanent free production tier

Where the wall is

Day 31. The sandbox is a trial, so anything you mean to keep running has to move onto a paid subscription or a managed cloud service.

After that: Managed OpenShift reserved instances from $0.076 an hour, on a 4-vCPU, 3-year contract with a minimum worker-node configuration. Self-managed subscription pricing depends on sizing and is not published as a list price.

Can you self-host Red Hat OpenShift? Paid plans only

Self-managed OpenShift Container Platform runs on your own infrastructure under a paid Red Hat subscription. The free Kubernetes distributions compared on this page are the route to self-hosting without one.

What it actually takes to run one yourself

Real RAM against the documented minimum, monthly cost, setup time, and the one thing that catches people out.

When paying is still the right call

Regulated enterprises that need Red Hat's support contract, certified operators, and the integrated pipeline/registry/console experience are buying something real — the subscription is defensible when the platform, not just Kubernetes, is what you use.

What you are locked into

OpenShift-specific objects — Routes, DeploymentConfigs, ImageStreams, the operator console — need translating back to vanilla Kubernetes (Ingress, Deployments, standard registries). It's real work but well-trodden; the underlying skills transfer completely.

If you would rather not pay: k3s

k3s

Certified Kubernetes in a single small binary — no platform tax.

Free, open-source; optional SUSE Rancher Prime support subscription
