Where the wall is
Reads. Retrieval-heavy apps burn read units fast, and Standard bills them at $16–18 per million on top of a $50 monthly minimum.
After that: Standard: $50 a month minimum, storage $0.33 per GB a month, writes $4–4.50 per million, reads $16–18 per million (by cloud and region). Enterprise: $500 minimum, writes $6–6.75, reads $24–27 per million.
Can you self-host Pinecone? No — cloud only

When paying is still the right call
If you want zero operations, elastic scale-to-zero serverless, and an SLA someone else owns — and the bill is acceptable — Pinecone remains the smoothest fully-managed option. Small prototypes fit comfortably in its free tier. Staying is a reasonable call when engineering time is scarcer than money.
What you are locked into
Moderate-to-high. Embeddings themselves are portable (re-upsert them anywhere), but index configuration, namespaces, metadata filters, and any pipeline code written against Pinecone's API need rework. Budget a re-index and an API migration; several alternatives ship Pinecone-compatible import tooling to soften it.
