Is Tableau free? What it actually costs in 2026

The short answer

Tableau Desktop Free Edition is free with the full authoring toolset, but everything stays on your machine — no publishing to Tableau Cloud or Server, no sharing. Tableau Cloud starts at $15 per user a month billed annually (Standard) and $35 (Enterprise).

The Free Edition connects to files and live databases and builds any visualisation Tableau Desktop can; the one thing it cannot do is publish or share. Tableau Cloud is an annual contract, billed annually, and every deployment needs at least one Creator licence.

What the free tier actually includes

  • Cloud+ and the Tableau+ bundle are priced by sales

Where the wall is

Sharing a dashboard. The moment a second person needs to open it live, you are buying Tableau Cloud at $15–35 per user a month on an annual contract, and the Creator seat that every deployment requires.

After that: Tableau Cloud Standard from $15 per user a month billed annually; Enterprise from $35; Cloud+ and Tableau+ Bundle by sales; capacity-based (Cloud) and compute-based (Server) pricing by sales.

Can you self-host Tableau? Paid plans only

Tableau Server is the self-managed edition, sold on the same per-user and compute-based terms. Metabase, Apache Superset and Lightdash are the open-source BI tools compared here.

What it actually takes to run one yourself

Real RAM against the documented minimum, monthly cost, setup time, and the one thing that catches people out.

Self-hosting Metabase

needs 2 GB for Metabase, which Metabase says is 'more than enough' for solo users or small teams, plus 2 GB for its PostgreSQL application database (docs say 1 GB (with 1 core), Metabase's stated baseline)$12–24/mo for a 5-user instance on a 4 GB VPS running Metabase and its PostgreSQL application database side by side

Self-hosting Apache Superset

needs 8 GB with 2 vCPU, the community figure the Superset FAQ cites. The FAQ says needs grow with concurrent users and their activity, not with data size (docs say Not stated by the vendor. The only figure in its docs is the FAQ's community report that 8 GB RAM and 2 vCPU run a moderately-sized instance)$24–48/mo on an 8 GB VPS for a compose install with PostgreSQL and Redis on the same box. The docs call that setup not production-ready; production means Kubernetes and a managed, backed-up metadata database, which costs more

When paying is still the right call

Stay if your analysts are genuinely fluent in it — Tableau's exploratory experience is still the best in the category and a fluent analyst is measurably faster in it than in anything open. Stay for the harder visualisation work: geospatial, complex table calculations and statistical overlays are areas where the alternatives are visibly behind. Stay if you are deep in the Salesforce estate, where the integration is real. And stay if governance, row-level security and enterprise support are contractual requirements.

What you are locked into

Moderate, and concentrated in the workbooks. Data connections are configuration and move easily. What does not move are the .twb workbooks themselves — calculated fields, table calculations, level-of-detail expressions and parameter logic are Tableau-specific and have no export path into another tool. A migration rebuilds every dashboard by hand. Organisations that keep their business logic in dbt models and use Tableau only for presentation migrate far more cheaply than those with years of calculation embedded in workbooks.
