Is Trello free? What it actually costs in 2026

The short answer

Trello Free gives you unlimited cards and unlimited Power-Ups, then caps you at 10 boards per workspace.

A genuinely usable free tier rather than a trial. Unlimited cards, unlimited Power-Ups on every plan, no time limit.

What the free tier actually includes

  • 10 boards per workspace
  • 10 collaborators per workspace
  • 250 automation runs per month
  • 10 MB maximum per file attachment
  • No Calendar, Timeline, Table, Dashboard or Map views

Where the wall is

The eleventh board. It is the most common reason people upgrade, and it arrives sooner than teams expect because Trello's own conventions encourage a board per project. The missing views are the second wall, and a sharper one — anyone who needs a timeline goes to Premium, not Standard.

After that: Standard $5 per user per month on annual billing ($6 monthly), Premium $10 annual ($12.50 monthly), Enterprise $17.50 annual.

Can you self-host Trello? No — cloud only

Trello is cloud-only. There has never been a self-hosted edition and Atlassian has given no indication one is coming.

When paying is still the right call

For one personal board or a small family list, Trello's free tier is still the path of least resistance — hosted, polished, zero setup. It's when you hit the 10-open-boards Workspace cap or need real permissions that the alternatives start paying for themselves.

What you are locked into

Boards, cards, and attachments are stored in Atlassian's cloud. Trello does provide a JSON/CSV export, so data isn't unrecoverable, but automations (Butler rules) and Power-Up configurations do not travel with an export and must be rebuilt on any alternative.
