PostHog

Skip the pipe — the analytics tool collects its own events.

The question worth asking before buying a customer data platform is whether you need one. A great many Segment deployments exist to feed a single analytics tool, and PostHog collects its own events, does product analytics, session replay, feature flags and experiments, and can export to your warehouse — no router in the middle. That removes an entire vendor, an entire bill and an entire failure mode. MIT core with an `ee/` enterprise carve-out, around 37k stars. If Segment's job in your stack is 'get events into one place', this deletes the job.

What it does well

  • +Removes the CDP entirely when analytics was the only destination
  • +Analytics, replay, flags and experiments in one product
  • +Self-hostable — behavioural data never leaves your infrastructure
  • +Very generous free tier

Where it falls short

  • Not a real CDP — it will not fan out to fifty marketing tools
  • Self-hosting at volume means operating ClickHouse
  • The `ee/` directory is not MIT
  • Wrong answer if marketing genuinely needs many destinations
