Is Claude Code free? What it actually costs in 2026
Yes, there is a free tier — with limits.
Verified on claude.com/pricing 2026-10-03. The Free plan does not include Claude Code. Pro is $20/month billed monthly, or $17/month on an annual plan ($200 up front). Max starts at $100/month and comes in two sizes, 5x or 20x Pro's usage; the page shows the starting price only. Team seats are $25/month standard or $125/month premium when billed monthly ($20 and $100 billed annually), and a premium seat gives 5x the usage of a standard one. Enterprise lists $20/seat/month billed annually plus usage at API rates. Every plan's usage resets on a rolling five-hour window, paid plans add weekly limits on top, and Claude Code draws from the same pool as Claude on the web, desktop and mobile. The other route is pay-as-you-go API credits through an Anthropic Console account, where the bill tracks the tokens you use.
When paying is still the right call
Often, honestly. If Claude models are doing your best work, Claude Code is the harness Anthropic builds for them, and it gets new capabilities such as subagents, skills, hooks, cloud sessions and scheduled routines directly rather than through a community port. Stay if the subscription is earning its keep: an open agent cannot use your Claude plan, so the same models on an API key can cost far more for heavy daily use; measure a real week before deciding. Stay if your organisation already runs it through Team or Enterprise with SSO and managed settings, or through Bedrock, Google Cloud or Foundry under an existing agreement. And if what you actually want is local inference rather than a different tool, Ollama documents running Claude Code against a local server with `ollama launch claude`; test that before you migrate anything.
What you are locked into
Low on your work, moderate on your setup, firm on billing. Your code is plain files in git and CLAUDE.md is plain markdown; Claude Code also reads AGENTS.md, the convention most open agents use, so one instruction file can serve several tools. Skills, hooks, subagents and MCP configuration take more effort to recreate, although MCP is an open standard that goose, Cline and Qwen Code all document support for, and opencode reads CLAUDE.md and ~/.claude/skills as fallbacks. The firmest tie is the subscription: Anthropic's legal and compliance page says Claude account sign-in is intended for ordinary use of Claude Code and other native Anthropic applications, and that third-party developers may not offer Claude account login in their own applications or route requests through Free, Pro or Max plan credentials. So if you move to an open agent and keep Claude models, you pay per token on an API key or a cloud provider rather than through your plan. On data (Anthropic's data-usage page, 2026-10-03): consumer accounts choose whether their data improves future models, with 5-year retention if they allow it and 30 days if they do not; commercial accounts (Team, Enterprise, API) are not trained on by default and keep 30-day retention, with zero data retention available to qualified Enterprise organisations. Session transcripts are also kept locally in plaintext under ~/.claude/projects/ for 30 days by default.

Free and open source (MIT); you pay your own model provider. Optional OpenCode Go at $10/month (Go Plus $40/month) for open-source models, or the pay-as-you-go Zen gateway. Verified on opencode.ai 2026-10-03.
